Purple frog among 24 new species found in Suriname
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A purple fluorescent frog is one of 24 new species found in the South American highlands of Suriname, conservationists reported on Monday, warning that these creatures are threatened by illegal gold mining The discovery of so many species outside the insect realm is extraordinary and points up the need to survey distant regions, said Leeanne Alonso of Conservation International, which led the expedition that found the new species. "When you go to these places that are so unexplored and so remote, we do tend to find new species ... but most of them are insects," Alonso said by telephone from Suriname's capital, Paramaribo. "What's really exciting here is we found a lot of new species of frogs and fish as well." The two-tone frog -- whose skin is covered with irregular fluorescent lavender loops on a background of aubergine -- was discovered in 2006 as part of a survey of Suriname's Nassau plateau, the conservation group said. Scientists combing Suriname's Nassau plateau and Lely Mountains found four other new frog species aside from the purple one, six species of fish, 12 dung beetles and a new ant species, the organization said in a statement. These creatures were discovered by 13 scientists who explored a region about 80 miles southeast of Paramaribo, including areas with enough clean fresh water sources to support abundant fish and amphibians. They also found 27 species native to the Guayana Shield region, which spreads over Suriname, Guyana, French Guiana and northern Brazil. One of these was the rare armored catfish, which conservationists feared was extinct because gold miners had contaminated a creek where it was last seen 50 years ago. Including the new species, the scientists observed 467 species at the two sites, ranging from large cats like panthers and pumas, to monkeys, reptiles, bats and insects. While these places are far from human civilization, they are totally unprotected and may be threatened by illegal gold-mining, Alonso said. These highland areas have also been investigated as sources of bauxite, used to make aluminum, but will most likely not be mined in the future, she said, at least not by the two mining companies that sponsored the study. The sponsors are BHP Billiton Maatschappij Suriname (BMS, a subsidiary of BHP Billiton) Suriname Aluminium Company LLC (Suralco, a subsidiary of Alcoa Inc). "It's an opportunity now for all the players, the mining companies who still have mining concessions there, the local communities, the government, the NGOs (non-governmental organizations), to try to make a regional plan for the area," Alonso said.

CONSERVATION:

Now days you see a lot more people with reptiles and that to me is a wonderful thing.I'm happy to see that these awesome animals are not considered slimy, scaly,or hideous creatures as many people used to say or think. Now don't get me wrong there are still people who are afraid or closed minded to reptiles but the numbers of herpers are growing. With this growing number of reptile lovers come a bunch of numbers that are of the negative effect.pet shops, private collectors,exporters,etc... are taking to many of these animals out of they're wild environments. What we as a whole need to do to help prevent this is try and keep, breed and buy captive born reptiles.Lots of reptile businesses and pet shops are doing this more and more everyday and believe me it is helping, and still you will see some wild caught but its ok as long as that particular animal is thriving in the wild.So what I ask you (the reptile lovers) is to keep this going.when you go to purchase your next snake, lizard, frog, and so on make sure you are getting captive born animals. In the long run it will make everyone happy especially the wild ball python with a clutch of eggs just livin it up in Africa. Pride Reptiles Interviews
Interview with Peter Kahl of Peter Kahl Reptiles ***** PR=Pride Reptiles/PK= Peter Kahl
PR: What was your influence to study herpetology? PK: My love for reptiles
PR: What was your first pet reptile? PK: A garter snake I found down the street when I was ten
PR:Have you ever dealt with venomous reptiles? PK: Yes , but I find boas and pythons my true passion
PR:I all your years dealing with reptiles , what would you say is your favorite? PK: I think the first time I held that garter snake when I was a kid
PR:What would your advice be for an amateur herper? PK: Get out while you can
PR:How do you feel about inbreeding in reptiles? PK: The same I feel about inbreeding in people , not good
PR:In your opinion , what could be done to help reptile breeders and dealers with all the new regulations being presented to us? PK: Donate to organizations such as NRAAC who keep us up on coming laws and how to fight them. Also you can help fight new laws by sending letters to government officials involved in such laws.
PR:You specialize in boas and pythons , which one has been your most successful? PK: I have to say both have been very good to us.Albino boas have been the corner stone of Peter Kahl Reptiles. We have done a lot to improve upon albino boas with many new forms since 1990. While the piebald ball python have been the most unusual color/pattern mutation we have worked with. I really think both have been great!
PR:What morph is your favorite of all boas and or pythons? PK: I really don't have one , but I will say I have had a really strong passion for boa constrictors since I was a kid.
PR: How do you feel about all the new competitors in the business? PK: I think it is great for our industry. The only thing that disturbs me is hearing about some of the people out there that are misrepresenting what they are selling to benefit themselves and hurt others. If someone is honest and is fair to others it comes back to them. It's a good way to look at things and it has worked well for me.Most people I know who are fair and good to others are very successful. The ones who are'nt usually fail.
PR:Where do you see herpetology going in the next 5-10 years? PK: Growing,Growing,Growing! There will always be people interested in reptiles.

Tips,Tricks&Advice
When buying a reptile think about what is going to suit you and the animal for the long run.A lot of people go out and buy the animals on impulse without thinking about the care of these animals, thay don't think about how big the burmese python or the monitor is going to get when they see it in the pet shop as a cute little baby. Then when they do see the time and space and care that is needed they dump the poor thing like a bad habit. So when your looking for a reptile as a pet do some research,Talk to your local herp club, ask friends who have had them.Don't just buy The animal because it looks nice or the price is cheap or you just got a wild hair up your butt to get a reptile.Get one that can be a long term buddy and something that you can handle.
